Characterizing Asymptotic Randomization in Abelian Cellular Automata

چکیده
Abelian cellular automata (CA) are CA which are group endomorphisms of the full group shift when endowing the alphabet with an abelian group structure. A CA randomizes an initial probability measure if its iterated images weak∗-converge towards the uniform Bernoulli measure (the Haar measure in this setting). We are interested in structural phenomena, i.e. randomization for a wide class of initial measures (under some mixing hypotheses). First, we prove that an abelian CA randomizes in Cesàro mean if and only if it has no soliton, i.e. a nonzero finite configuration whose time evolution remains bounded in space. This characterization generalizes previously known sufficient conditions for abelian CA with scalar or commuting coefficients. Second, we exhibit examples of strong randomizers, i.e. abelian CA randomizing in simple convergence; this is the first proof of this behaviour to our knowledge. We show however that no CA with commuting coefficients can be strongly randomizing. Finally, we show that some abelian CA achieve partial randomization without being randomizing: the distribution of short finite words tends to the uniform distribution up to some threshold, but this convergence fails for larger words. Again this phenomenon cannot happen for abelian CA with commuting coefficients.

Linear cellular automata , asymptotic randomization , and entropy
If A = Z/2, then A Z is a compact abelian group. A linear cellular automaton is a shift-commuting endomorphism Φ of A. If μ is a probability measure on A, then Φ asymptotically randomizes μ if Φjμ converges to the Haar measure as j→∞, for j in a subset of Cesàro density one. Via counterexamples, we show that nonzero entropy of μ is neither necessary nor sufficient for asymptotic randomization. ...
متن کاملCriticality in driven cellular automata with defects
We study three models of driven sandpile-type automata in the presence of quenched random defects. When the dynamics is conservative, all these models, termed the random sites (A), random bonds (B), and random slopes (C), selforganize into a critical state. For Model C the concentration-dependent exponents are nonuniversal. In the case of nonconservative defects, the asymptotic state is subcrit...
متن کاملLimiting Shapes for a Non-Abelian Sandpile Growth Model and Related 353 Cellular Automata
We present limiting shape results for a non-abelian variant of the abelian sandpile growth model (ASGM), some of which have no analog in the ASGM. One of our limiting shapes is an octagon. In our model, mass spreads from the origin by the toppling rule in Zhang’s sandpile model. Previously, several limiting shape results have been obtained for the ASGM using abelianness and monotonicity as main...
متن کاملPre-Expansivity in Cellular Automata
We introduce the property of pre-expansivity for cellular automata (CA): it is the property of being expansive on asymptotic pairs of configurations (i.e. configurations that differ in only finitely many positions). Pre-expansivity therefore lies between expansivity and pre-injectivity, two important notions of CA theory. We show that there exist one-dimensional pre-expansive CAs which are not ...
متن کاملEdge Detection Based On Nearest Neighbor Linear Cellular Automata Rules and Fuzzy Rule Based System
Edge Detection is an important task for sharpening the boundary of images to detect the region of interest. This paper applies a linear cellular automata rules and a Mamdani Fuzzy inference model for edge detection in both monochromatic and the RGB images. In the uniform cellular automata a transition matrix has been developed for edge detection. The Results have been compared to the ...
